Yup, you make sense. In America, everything is a dollar figure, including people. To a European who grew up with humanist values, this is deeply alienating and now that I’m back in France for a while, I realize what a bad fit so-called American culture is for me. I always refer to immigration as an organ transplant that didn’t take, and even though I’m a US citizen, this isn’t a joke.

Of course this isn’t to say we don’t have massive issues in Europe too, as you know.
