One major issue is aggressive marketing, to the point when copy is designed to engage algorithms and not human minds anymore (especially here). Also, rare are the people who genuinely want to engage, and rarer even those able to entertain a point of view different from their own so we’re not having conversations anymore, only writing at one another.
Re news, maybe stick to a couple of reliable news sources and dump the rest. My advice would be BBC and the Guardian, both of which have a robust US presence, solid editorial standards and excellent analysis, plus great apps. Their journalism is what journalism should be and it won’t rot your brain, I promise. You may fall into rabbit holes because they’re unfailingly thought-provoking. (CBC is also great but the BBC has more resources…)
