Recovery isn’t linear at all.

And for many of us with mental health issues, there may be no such thing as a full recovery.

More than likely, I will never be completely rid of depression for example. To me, recovery means finding a way to live with depression, to become functional again, and to thrive despite it.

I think this also applies to addiction. As many alcoholics will tell you, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.

There’s no such thing as a magic bullet. Getting better rests on an individual desire for improvement and the willingness to make it happen regardless of obstacles. However, help and support can work wonders if one has the good fortune to have them. Everyone needs a helping hand, no one is superhuman, alas.

On the other hand, going it alone is a long, hard slog fraught with relapses but it’s not impossible either. The human mind is far stronger than we give it credit for.
