America is weirdly insular, more so than any island I’ve ever lived on. There seems to be little awareness of the world beyond its borders, something I witnessed firsthand working as an educational tour director. I don’t know if it’s an educational issue or a cultural one, or a mixture of both. Even the press falls short, IMO.
A lot of America can be monotonous indeed but the part where I live thankfully isn’t. The Pacific Northwest is stunning, even though it does have its fair share of ugly strip malls…
I’m lucky to have been to New Mexico, too, and if there was ever a place that stole my heart it’d have to be Santa Fe, despite the fact that I don’t fare well in landlocked places.
