The above is why I write, Helen. Your words also echo many of my concerns regarding the personal essay as a format.

Regrettably, it seems to have become weaponized and hammed up to garner pity clicks instead of encouraging critical thinking, empathy, and compassion.

As a platform/publisher hybrid, Medium is a tool, as neutral as the internet itself. As such, what we use it for and how directly influences its identity.

Creating and supporting filler content that promotes voyeurism and schadenfreude and elevates greed to a virtue begets more of the same, alas.

It also impoverishes the global conversation by dividing us into innumerable echo chambers instead of bringing us together…

Thank you for this powerful reminder to be and do better, one word at a time, and hold ourselves accountable for what we write.
