You don’t pick up a language, you develop a lifelong intellectual and often affective relationship with it. The latter will push you to communicate come what may.
I fell into Portuguese and it unlocked a part of me I never knew was there – plainly put, it is the language my hearts speaks even though I learned it when I was already past 30. No class ever, just complete immersion and being spellbound, which I still am. Oh, and a good conjugations book!
