Tom Gregg, the problem with a so-called wealth tax is that it drives people out of the country, as we found out in France. Some rich folks then go on to get another citizenship to protect their assets. As a case in point, actor Gérard Depardieu has been a Russian citizen since 2013.
A wealth tax isn’t the best idea for the economy and Emmanuel Macron has been smart enough to scrap it. And yes, I’m writing this as a lifelong socialist and former union rep.
But as the 2017 elections showed France, socialism needs to adapt or it’ll perish. In fact, it has: the French Parti Socialiste is dead as a dodo and their former presidential candidate — Benoit Hamon — has left politics altogether.
Macron single-handedly blew up the French political establishment and the dust hasn’t settled yet. It’s an almighty mess but France is moving forward, which is all that matters. Former president François Hollande is still foaming at the mouth mind you but he hasn’t done anything to help reinvent the PS. He just writes books and has become a national joke, which is a pity because no one ever gives him credit for holding the country together during the slew of terrorist attacks we had back in 2015.
This is a long-winded way of thanking you for a piece that makes a lot of sense. We really, really, really need to put our heads together across the political spectrum and do what’s best for America. And yet, folks continue to behave like spoiled brats whining about every single candidate. This lack of intellectual engagement and maturity is simply unfathomable to me.
Patriotism isn’t partisan, the election isn’t personal but go try and explain this to entitled voters who got their knickers in a twist yesterday because Biden, allegedly, is just as bad as Trump…
The 2020 US presidential election is like the 2017 French one, a massive shit sandwich and we’re all going to have to take a bite and swallow. My state — WA — has open primaries on March 10. I voted and regardless of whether my chosen candidate makes it, I’ll rally behind whoever gets the Democratic nomination since the Republicans haven’t bothered to come up with an alternative to Trump.
Because being a socialist doesn’t preclude critical thinking, and maybe one day there’ll be a Republican who makes more sense than a Democrat. Based on US history since I’ve been alive, there hasn’t been yet but it doesn’t mean it can’t happen…
