Too close for comfort, White Feather.
I ended up interviewing a former Hitler Jugend leader when I was still a university student.
It happened completely by accident as I didn’t know he had been one. Somehow, he decided to open up and my brain defaulted to interview mode in an act of self-protection because curiosity compelled me to try and understand this man.
And he was nostalgic, too, so much so he had kept Nazi memorabilia that should have been destroyed after WW2.
He was pure evil concealed beneath a benevolent appearance. Get too close however and his true colors started showing.
His daughter loathed him with a passion.
Because I was very young and very naive, I had no idea people like him still existed. I could never bring myself to have that comversation with my grandpa, who would have had a lot to say and who sadly died a few months after my study trip.
